Question: I received the following error when building a web from a template in FrontPage 2000: "An error occurred accessing your FrontPage web files. Authors- if authoring a web server, please contact the webmaster for this server's site. Webmasters- please see the server's system log for more details."

Reply:

This situation appears to occur after Windows XP or Windows 2000 Pro users have downloaded and installed the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions security patch #KB813379 from Microsoft Update. Additionally, it seems to only occur when the template being used contains flash (.swf) files or other non-html files.

How to Work Around the Problem

Preferred Method: Upgrade FrontPage

The most practical solution is to upgrade to FrontPage 2003, which is by far more superior than FrontPage 2000.  FP2003 has many great features unheard of back with the release of FP2000, and the upgrade will make your web publishing experience much easier and better!

Alternative Method:  Remove the Hotfix

A less secure solution to work around this issue is to remove the hotfix that is causing the problem. Doing so will remove the protection offered by the hotfix. The hotfix addresses an issue with IIS and FrontPage 2000 Server extensions on your local machine. Most users do not use or need these running. The patch is applied whether these are enabled or not. If you believe that this would compromise your security in an unacceptable way, we recommend that you not do this. The steps to remove the hotfix are as follows:

  1. Navigate to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/ Remove Programs.
  2. Within the list of currently installed programs, find Hotfix #KB813379. This is the patch that is the cause of the problem.
  3. Select the item and click the "Remove" button.

If you remove the hotfix, please confirm that IIS and FrontPage 2000 Extensions have been disabled on your system. To confirm that they have been disabled, please do the following:

  1. Navigate to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/ Remove Programs. Click on "Add/ Remove Windows Components."
  2. Find "Internet Information Services (IIS). This should be unchecked.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Click Finish

You will now be able to build a web with the template.

Last Resort Method:  Request a zip file

Since the problem occurs when building the new web, not when USING the web, you can e-mail us specifying the template name and your invoice number requesting a zip file.  We will build a new web for you with the template, then zip it up and email it back.  You will then be able to open the unzipped web within FP2000.  Note that we will require 24-48 hours to provide the zipped file.
